At Country Properties, we understand the importance of feeling as though you belong in your community. There are many ways that people feel at home, and a lot of these happen outside of the property itself. We aim to keep in touch with the latest news and events in Biggleswade that impact your life, so connect with us to be fully informed.
While the face of Biggleswade has changed and evolved in recent years, there might be more changes in the near future. This is because two pubs which have been very popular with Biggleswade residents have been listed for sale.
It is not as though regulars are being thrown out of their seats mid-drink, both of these pubs have been empty for some time. However, while the buildings remained, many residents harboured hopes that these pubs would return, with new owners returning the ventures to a former glory.
Local pubs serve as community hubs
There is a lot to be said for the impact a local pub has on a community. While external features such as transport, schools and shops receive more attention in the housing market, there is no denying that many people want to feel at home in an area.
This includes having facilities close to home that help you socialise and meet with others. Or perhaps, allows you a bit of time to escape from home, and a local pub can be a thriving part of the community.
Therefore, there will be some people feeling sad about the New Inn and the Red Lion being listed on a leading property portal. Both pubs carried an asking price of £425,000.
Both of the venues are Grade II listed properties, and they were part of a plan that would massively impact the town centre. UK Regeneration, a developer, bought the pubs, and there were hope that the area would benefit from considerable regeneration.
These plans appear to be over with an independent councillor for Biggleswade South, Dr Hayley Whitaker admitting as much on Facebook. Dr Hayley Whitaker said; “all of these plans now seem to have fallen by the wayside”.
The previous plans for the pubs were to:
· Transform the New Inn into a bar and restaurant, which would be completed with a gin distillery at the rear of the building
· The Red Lion was set to be a community hub with additional apartments/flats located at the rear of the building, where the car park resides
The New Inn listing states that it is a “two-storey property situated within Market Square” with benefits such as:
· A separate access to private accommodation
· Dining room area
· Character bar
· Microbrewery building
The Red Lion, located on London Road, is also another two-storey building, with the listing claiming it has “potential for alternative use subject to the necessary planning consents”.
