About Biggleswade

Biggleswade is an expanding market town located 40 miles north of central London.

There’s a busy high street in the town, with exciting independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, as well as national high street names. Biggleswade has many things to do, great transport, fantastic amenities, and a strong local community. The town benefits from excellent road and rail links. Biggleswade train station has direct, regular trains to London and Peterborough providing a great service for commuters. It’s also close to the A1, giving easy access to larger towns nearby (such as Bedford or Stevenage) as well as cities in the north and London.

Biggleswade has a three-tier education system and offers a great choice of lower, middle and upper schools to buyers and tenants in the area.

Visit Gunns Bakery to try the Bedfordshire Clanger; a traditional suet pastry with a savoury filling in one end and sweet in the other. It originated in the 19th century as a full portable meal for men who went out to work all day in the fields when the area provided most of the vegetables and produce for London. Even today, much of the UK get their vegetable supply from this area. Biggleswade was the first home of Jordans’ Cereals and you can still visit the original Jordan’s Mill today, which is now a working museum. Found on the banks of the River Ivel, you can enjoy some food in the Riverside Café whilst looking over the water. It’s also worth exploring the beautiful Mill Gardens. Don’t forget to visit the very highly regarded John O’Gaunt Inn which offers delicious home cooked food and real ales.

Biggleswade has two bustling weekly markets held on Tuesdays and Saturdays within its attractive Market Square. The square is surrounded by local shops, cafes, eateries as well as larger supermarkets. There are even more shopping opportunities at the retail park just off the A1 with Marks & Spencer, Next, River Island and many more household names. Not forgetting the regular food festivals offering a range of different cuisines.

Saxon Pool & Leisure Centre has great activities for people of all ages. There’s a 25m pool, fully equipped gym, sports hall, and many classes to choose from. The leisure centre also offers a creche facility for those with little ones. Just a short drive from the town is the much sought after John O’Gaunt Golf Club, offering a challenging and enjoyable 18-hole course to members and visitors alike.

To get away from it all, visit the beautiful Shuttleworth Swiss Garden, which is an RHS Partner Garden that has created stunning landscapes in an alpine style. It’s a very tranquil setting, with much to discover and enjoy.

Residents also enjoy The Green Wheel, which is a walking and cycling circuit around Biggleswade that passes through various areas of landscape, heritage and different wildlife interests. The wheel circles the town, but also has a number of access paths linking parts of the town to the edge of the wheel.

Biggleswade’s nearby villages are popular with buyers and tenants alike and include Sutton, Everton, Potton, Gamlingay, Tempsford, Blunham, Moggerhanger, Waresley, Great
