Why buy in Bedford ?

Bedfordshire’s county town is a leafy settlement on the River Great Ouse, the waterway and its Victorian Embankment, gardens and Butterfly Bridge all bring sophistication to the town centre. The embankment is home to restaurants, bars  and hotels making it a fantastic place to catch up with friends or go out with your family. The Embankment is also  where the ever popular Bedford River festival  takes place in July every other year, and is free to attend. It offers something for everyone, including live entertainment and activities, a funfair, raft and dragon boat races, plus the heritage village, sports village and water sports arena.

Bedford has always been popular with families mostly due to the Harpur Trust schools, they are renowned for their educational opportunities and their impressive track records.

The student and HMO market is thriving. The HMO market thrives in Bedford due to the Universities but also for professionals working in London. From Bedford train station you can go directly into London in just 40 minutes.

Bedfords streets are lined with Victorian houses and nice neighbourhoods. The Castle Road area, with its mix of 19th-century terraces and semis and its good local shops, is especially sought after. Also the Poets area. But around Bedford Park and Park Avenue has the largest and more expensive Victorian homes.

The average property price over the last 12 months has been £155,919 for a apartment, £226,709 for a terraced property, £420,952 for a detached property and £281,149 for a semi detached property. In the rental market the average for  a one-bedroom flat is between £550-£800pcm and a three bedroom house is between  £850-£1,300pcm.


Country properties are fantastic estate agents, after limited success with previous agents Country properties sold our house quickly using traditional methods of calling around clients and getting people to view the house. Some estate agents just rely on the rightmove advert! Country properties spent time to research the village and as part of the advert put about local attractions and benefits of the location. The pictures were also better than others. In particular Francessca from the Bedford branch was amazing and helped us right the way to completion. Bedford Local Area 

Bedford is a traditional English market town that’s changed and expanded a lot in recent years. It’s recently developed a much more cosmopolitan culture and offers something to people of all ages.

 Bedford has two train stations; Bedford Station and Bedford St Johns. Bedford Station is used by Luton and London commuters, reaching the capital city in an hour on average, though some trains are quicker than others. Luton Airport is easily accessed in just over 20 minutes using direct trains from Bedford.

Bedford has excellent state and private schools, and both are highly sought after. The Harpur Trust alone manages four independent schools within Bedford.

Bedford has a great retail presence with St Cuthberts Arcade, Greyfriars Arcade and The Arcade hosting many independent retailers. The Harpur Centre is home to over 30 national chain stores and food outlets, and The Howard Centre has a mix of over 14 different types of stores. Riverside Bedford is set on the beautiful banks of the river, with a cinema, restaurants and a hotel. 

Bedford has a rich history, with markets held on St Paul’s square since the 1500s. There are still several markets held here each week, including a Charter (general) Market, Farmers Market, a Handmade in Bedford Market, and a Bedford Gourmet Market.

John Bunyan was imprisoned in Bedford Gaol for 12 years in 1660, and this is where he wrote the famous The Pilgrim’s Progress, which is a significant religious, fictional work that is written as if in a dream. 

Near the centre of town and overlooking the River Ouse, is Bedford Castle mound; this is all that remains of Bedford’s medieval castle. The castle was a motte and bailey castle built after 1100, by Henry I.

There are plenty of places to keep active here with Bedford Rowing Club, Robinson Pool, the tropical Oasis Beach Pool and Bedford Bunyan Sports Centre. Bedford even has the world’s largest indoor skydiving venue; Twinwoods Adventure Centre.

Bedford has an increasingly diverse population, including one of the largest Italian communities in the country. This is reflected in the town’s food, with plenty of Italian restaurants, cafes and delis to enjoy, as well as various other cuisines. Popular restaurant choices include Pizzeria Santaniello (which opened in 1980), Vietnamese restaurant Que Huong, Thai Lagoon restaurant, and The Embankment, which is a mock-Tudor pub offering seasonal British food. 

Established in the Victorian era, Bedford Park has many traditional English features, including a bandstand and cricket pavilion. There’s also Robinson Pool (for outdoor swimming), a café (open in summer months), children's playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, and a football field too.

Bedford is part of the London Commuter Belt, which means that it continues to grow and prosper, and this has led to more modern buildings being seen within the town. The Butterfly Bridge is a modern structure that crosses the River Ouse, and it was opened by Prince Charles in 1998.

South of Bedford are the Cardington Hangars, originally constructed in 1917 and originally used for building airships. They became used once more for training, for training, in World War II. More recently, they’ve been used to film movies such as Star Wars, Batman Begins, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and this lead to celebrities such as Johnny Depp being seen in Bedford town centre.
