Spring is a hugely exciting time for many people because it provides you with the chance to spend more time out of the house. The winter wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but the weather was still unsettled enough at times to make sure you had no intention of leaving the house. February enticed us with some very bright and sunny days but it is the arrival of Spring in Hitchin that is finally raising our optimism levels for the rest of the year.

A visit to Oughtonhead provides you with the chance to walk along the river and you can even enjoy a paddle if you so desire. This walk alongside the nature reserve has been extremely well preserved and you will even have the chance to spot some wildlife. This should make the activity suitable for all the family and the vast majority of the path is buggy-friendly.
If you feel as though you have been starved of colour for too long, a trip to Hitch Wood may be exactly what you are looking for. In Spring, you will find the bluebell woods blossoming and there is a lot of space where you can venture off, explore and relax. You don’t need to spend money to see some fantastic sights in Hitchin this Spring and the bluebells of Hitch Wood are always worth seeing.
Spring is the time to play
While a walk can be fun and entertaining, it may not be interesting or exciting enough for all your family. Thankfully, there are plenty of playgrounds available in Hitchin with Bancroft Play Area being a notable favourite.
The pirate ship is a natural attraction for youngsters and with plenty of ways to climb and slide, this is a location that will keep your youngsters busy. There are also swings for babies and younger children and there are plenty of paths if your children are on their bike or scooter. The splash park isn’t available until May, so it won’t be long until the full facilities of the park can be enjoyed.
For parents with younger children, the Chaucer Way Play Area is likely to be of interest as this is an area that has been deemed suitable for under 5s. There is balancing equipment, a slide, a climbing frame and swings for babies, so if you have young children this tarmacked play area could be of interest.
As you would expect, the British Schools Museum has a range of events lined up in the next few weeks. If you are not convinced the weather will improve soon, you can partake in Escape Room events or yoga classes. With Easter around the corner there is also a range of special Easter events with egg trails, craft activities and fun for all the family on the 10th and 11th and then again on the 17th and 18th of April.
Enjoy some culture with the Hitchin Chamber Orchestra
If you are looking for an evening out with some culture, Hitchin Town Hall is the place to be on Saturday 23rd March. The “From Russia With Love” event takes place and this will be the first concert of 2019 for the Hitchin Chamber Orchestra. Featuring music by Tchaikovsky and Glazunov, this is an event that doesn’t come around too often and is a fantastic night.
